points scored in the event of disqualifiction or equipment changes ...

Toyota have been disqualified from qualification, yet their drivers DID take part - so will they score quali points based on them being at the back of the grid, or a big fat zero ? I'm guessing the latter, but the rules don't allow for this situation as written.

Hamilton qualified in 15th, and then took a penalty to change his gearbox - so does he and his car/engine score points for 15th, 20th, or nothing because he effectively hasn't posted a time ? again - how is this dealt with after the corrections made for Toyota ? 13th, 18th, or still zero ?

If it's zero, then that would mean a car that gets pole, but is forced to change an engine and so get demoted to 11th, would score zero - not sure that makes sense.

confused !

Hey good question which will

Hey good question which will be valid all season with other disputes and potential engine changes.
There are apparently other disputes currently underway in Australia as well, I guess concerning the potentially dodgy wings which could affect the entire grid and qualifying points if a ruling goes against Brawn GP!

I guess it doesn't matter how it's done

so long as it's consistent - afterall, we're all locked in now anyway.

I'd suggest that any car/driver that is disqualified during qualifying and therefore demoted to the back, should score no points for qualifying (just as would happen if a car was disqualified during a race)

But a car that qualifies, but then takes a penalty for equipment change should score points based on their final grid position, not their original one.

So for example, Hamilton would score for 18th place (pending the outcome of the protest over Ferrari and Red Bull wings).

Yes, good question.

Since I began running this site in 2005, I don't remember a time when anyone got disqualified from qualification. This is different to the change of engine/gearbox situation for which a precedent has already been set.

So, here's what will happen:

Disqualified during qualification

Drivers will not gain any qualifying points. Cars and Engines will not gain qualifying points for the disqualified driver's car.

Change of engine/gearbox

All components will keep their qualifying points based on qualifying position, not grid position. My reasoning for this is that when a driver changes engine/gearbox, he is penalised by being moved back 10 places on the grid. So he will probably end up scoring less race points as a result... unless he has a great race, in which case, he deserves the points!

I expect some discussion on this subject, but ultimately I will be adding these two rules to the instructions page.

As many of you will know, the scoring on this site is based directly on the results shown on formula1.com. At the time of writing this, the Australia qualifying results page is still showing the Toyota's in positions 6 & 8. However, this is because the FIA has only released preliminary standings so far. I expect these results to be update to include the disqualifications very soon.

I was nervous for a while...

I was nervous for a while, because the results on formula1.com did not show these disqualifications, but fortunately in the last hour they have updated them.

So hopefully everyone will agree with the results and the way the scoring has been implemented. Please leave comments here if you want to discuss it ;o)

What happens now pitpass is

What happens now pitpass is saying that trulli has been handed a 25 second penalty? Do the results change?

Wait and see...

As mentioned previously, all the results are based on the results at formula1.com. If they are updated, I will update the results/scores accordingly.

Watch this space...

Busy, busy, busy!

Wow, what a busy morning! :o) The results have been updated yet again, this time to take account of Trulli's penalty. Hopefully, that will be the last update.

Possible scoring error

First off, just wanted to say well done on creating and running an ace site. I'm using your rules (slightly modified to allow a bigger budget and a transfer window) to run a league at work. The spreadsheet that I've set up though is giving lower points for Trulli, Glock and Toyota following their disqualification from qualification last week.

Your previous comment in this thread stated that drivers, cars and engines would score no points for qualification if they were disqualified so I updated my spreadsheet accordingly. The points on the site seem to show that Glock and Trulli have been scored as if coming in 19th and 20th respectively. Just thought that you may wish to check.

Once again, thanks for the great site!

You're right.

They should have scored zero points for qualifying. There is an error in the code that works out the scores. I'll work on it and post back when I've worked out how to fix it.

Thanks for spotting it.

Testers needed

I've been working on this problem and now think I have fixed it. I have put the new code on my test site so that I can check that it is working properly. If you have a spare 10 minutes, it would be useful if you could check the results on that site to see if they are what you were expecting. I'd rather it was checked thoroughly on the test site before it is released on this site. If anyone spots any problems with those results, please let me know.
Thanks.

Tested

Ian,
I've been onto your test site and the scores match those in my spreadsheet so I would say that your new code is working correctly.
Cheers,
Chrissy

Re: Tested

Thanks Chrissy :o) I'll update this site after the weekend.
