Knockout competition
Thanks to an early suggestion by SIDDY, along with some positive feedback, I am today able to launch a trial knockout competition. Hopefully, this will add a bit of interest to those teams that are not doing quite so well in the league.
The format is simple:
- The knockout competition will operate over the final 13 races of the 2009 F1 season, so the first round will be Spain.
- Every team has been entered into the first round draw.
- The draw for every round is completely random.
- The second round draw will only contain 4096 teams (a factor of 2), so some teams have been given a bye through round one.
- Each match will have only one winner.
- In the event of a tie in the final, the tiebreaker will be used to decide the winner.
- In the event of a tie in any other round, the away team will go through to the next round.
This is operating purely on a trial basis, so I am very interested in any feedback you may have. I'll also be improving the user interface throughout the rest of the season, so again, I'm interested to hear what you'd like to see.
The current knockout draw page is very large (4096 matches), so it will be difficult to find your teams. I'm working on code to add the knockout matches to the team pages, but until that is ready, you will need to use 'Find' within you browser to search for your team names.

That's a great idea!
The only thing i don't like the team on away side will go through if a draw.
Because it's not like football were they might have an advantage of home ground so I'm a little uncomfortable there but the rest is fantastic!
Away team
Yes, I know the away team going through if there is a tie is not the ideal way, but it was simple to implement. And without any better suggestions I just wanted to get something up and running.
The away team going through acts as a random selector because the draw is completely random in the first place. The only other option was to use the tiebreaker time, but that is practically a random selector for any round other than the final.
But... I'm still open to other suggestions.

Most overall points?
Maybe whoever has the most overall point for the season would be a fairer way to decide the winner if the points are drawn, i understand there are only a certain amount of options you can take creating your team, so after this you could use you 'away team' rule..
Only an idea, thought it might help.
Oh and is there an easy way to see who you and your fellow league drivers are against in the Competition, and to see how they do, im sure it's really obvious as no-one has asked about it but can't seem to find it, sorry..

if points are equal
For the cup competion - I agree with an earlier comment that if the points are tied it seems unfair if the 'away' team goes through.
My suggestion would be for the team who at the time has scored less points in the overall main league should go through. i.e. it keeps teams in the lower positions interested knowing that they have a slight advantage if tied. I think that this would be fairer and I think easier to administer / program.

Matt and Theo have both made good, but opposing, suggestions. I'm sure there will be loads of different opinions about the tie rule. Maybe we should collect all of the suggestions and have a vote?

Unless I misread a team name:
Fixture 2222 your team lost 248-264.
Fixtures 3058, 3368, and 3781 your teams all had byes.

It's too late for this year, but if the cup is intended to keep people interested for longer would it be better to give byes to people with only one team? Come the 2nd round you've then still got more people in it.

Search bar?
Maybe a search bar at the top of knockouts so we can easy search our teams and see how they did? If thats atall possible

Hey that's a great idea, i've spent 20 mins searching for my teams but at least i found them this time!
Knockout search
To find you team easily, press control and F on the keyboard at the same time whilst looking at the draw. This opens a search window. Type in part of your team name and then press next (Leave the other boxes blank). This will take you to and highlight the name in the list. If the team name is not yours, click next again and it will find the next name. quicker than scrolling down them all.
